Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention - Safe Resident Handling (SRH)

Who should take this course: care staff who perform care on residents including lifts, transfers, and bed mobility.

Workshop description: Safe Resident handling helps give care staff the skills needed to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury (MSI). MSIs are one of the highest categories of injury in the continuing care industry. This course is designed to provide best practice technique to help staff work more effectively, efficiently, and productively while reducing the overall risk of injury.

Expected outcomes:

  • Identify the early signs and symptoms of a musculoskeletal injury (MSI) and explain its potential impacts.
  • Identify resident handling related hazards that can lead to injury.
  • Implement methods to reduce the risk of injury based on hazards.
  • Know the basics of, and demonstrate the use of, good body mechanics in relation to resident handling.

 Activities: Theoretical instruction with approximately 2 hours of hands-on practice.
