Alberta nurses, AHS in bargaining that could end prohibition on strikes

In traversing an ethical minefield, Alberta nurses and their employers are negotiating to determine how the caregivers will be deemed an essential service.

An agreement on that question would lift the 35-year ban on nurses striking and even arbitration in labour disputes, said United Nurses of Alberta Director of Labour Relations David Harrigan. 

The sensitivity of the matter and the stakes involved mean the talks are fraught with complexities, he said.
