Testing Resources

Essential skills testing is an accessible and practicable way to implement Essential Skills at the workplace.  The testing is a valuable resource for ensuring that pre-hire and existing employees have the necessary Essentials Skills for success in the workplace.   

For ease of use, the CCSA has provided employers with the testing materials for levels 1 and 2 of the three foundational Essential Skills – Reading, Writing and Numeracy.  This testing material was developed by the Government of Canada’s Employment and Social Development Canada and more information can be found on their website.

  1. To use the following materials, employers can simply print both an assessor booklet and client booklet for the desired level of testing.  These tools are easy to use and any employer or supervisor can be an assessor.                                                            
  2. Prior to giving an employee or applicant a client booklet, the assessor should read the assessor booklet and give the employee or applicant any necessary instructions prior to giving the assessment.                                                                                            
  3. Following any necessary instructions, the employee can complete the assessment booklet.                                                                                                                                                                                   
  4. After an employee has completed the booklet, the assessor will then mark the assessment following the marking instructions in the assessor booklet, including determining pass or fail and whether to continue with testing.
